WEB SITE OF THE WEEK: THE EXCITEMENT, WITHOUT THE CROWDS

heat indexes and humidity are becoming increasingly
important measurements to be on top of in Atlanta. Luckily for
fans and athletes alike, weather forecasts are just one of the
many features supplied by SI Online's Olympic Web site at
http://www.sportsillustrated.com. In addition to temperature,
the "What's Happening Today" area lists the day's "Hot Tickets"
as well as SI's choice to win gold that day. "Spotlight On" is a
daily highlight of a specific Olympic athlete. Unlike other
Olympic Web sites, however, SI doesn't focus only on U.S.
athletes or the most popular sports. For instance, Monday's
feature athlete was Russian wrestler Aleksandr Karelin. Still,
Tuesday featured 14-year-old U.S. swimmer Amanda Beard. In
addition to listing highlights of the previous day's results, the
"Scorecard" section offers a look at the "Serious and the Silly."
Serious features include pictures and a description of two Dutch
college students who scaled the $300M security fence at Olympic
Stadium giving them free run of the place just hours before the
Opening Ceremonies, while the silly contains such trivia as U.S.
volleyball player Bob Ctvrtlik's nickname -- "Buy a Vowel." The
site also includes comic strips, an area to purchase merchandise
and a section to send E-mail to the magazine (THE DAILY).
