NAMES IN THE NEWS

According to a report in this morning's N.Y. POST by Jack
Newfield, boxing promoter BOB ARUM has made a deal with federal
investigators for immunity in exchange for testimony that he paid
IBF President ROBERT LEE to "rig" the governing body's ratings
system. An interview by Arum alleging corruption in the IBF will
be published in next month's KO Magazine. While Lee denied the
charges, the POST cites another source -- a boxing manager -- who
reports payments for ranking. Newfield adds that the feds are
also pursuing tax fraud charges against the IBF (N.Y. POST,
7/23).... Prosecutors will not confirm a report in the German
news weekly DER SPIEGEL that STEFFI GRAF has agreed to pay $2M in
taxes to end an ongoing investigation of tax evasion (USA TODAY,
7/23)....Former Phillies star JOHN KRUK comments to the N.Y.
DAILY NEWS on the film, "The Fan," in which he makes his acting
debut. Kruk: "They got books up above the damn dugout, and I
told 'em there ain't a [expletive] baseball team in the world
that's got books in the dugout. But they don't listen to me.
Same thing with throwing and batting. I like [Wesley] Snipes and
everything, but he hit a [expletive] building with that swing"
(PEOPLE DAILY, 7/20).
