OLYMPIC NOTES

ACOG CEO Billy Payne ran with the Olympic torch yesterday
inside UGA's Sanford Stadium. He handed it off to his old
football coach, Vince Dooley (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
7/16)....Payne gave his final report to the IOC, reporting that
preparations are finished. Payne: "Everyone is ready to party"
(KYODO NEWS, 7/15)....The HOUSTON CHRONICLE previews the expected
"Olympian" traffic problems (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 7/16)....MARTA,
Atlanta's public transportation system, has started running 24
hours (WASHINGTON POST, 7/16)....The IOC approved the first
Palestinian Olympic team, despite Israel's objection (N.Y. DAILY
NEWS, 7/16).
AND FINALLY, THIS: ABC's "World New Tonight" is tracking
how certain insects would fare against top Olympic athletes.
Last night, it was revealed that the American cockroach -- if
enhanced to normal human dimensions -- would run at upwards of
200 mph, easily defeating sprinter Michael Johnson in the 200
Meters and breaking his world record (19.66 seconds) by almost 17
seconds (ABC, 7/15).
