NFL REWORKS SOME X'S AND O'S BEFORE BIDDING FOR S.B. XXXIV

In order to eliminate problems such as hotel price gouging,
ambush marketing and Internet copyright and infringement
difficulties, the NFL is calling for stronger agreements with the
yet-to-be-determined host city of Super Bowl XXXIV, according to
the PHOENIX BUSINESS JOURNAL. NFL Special Events Dir Jim Steeg
says the new policy comes as a result of issues that arose during
Super Bowl XXX in Tempe last January. Steeg: "Everybody learned
that handshakes aren't as good as contracts. So, we are trying
to put together contracts that will eliminate some problems down
the road. ... We need to make sure everybody knows what rights
everybody has." Steeg added that one caveat of the agreements
will be a fine for reneging on contract terms. Meanwhile, a
Super Bowl XXXIV Bid Committee for AZ, chaired by Bank One
Arizona CEO Michael Welborn, has been formed. The committee will
compile info to submit to the NFL during September 10-11
meetings. The league will award Super Bowl XXXIV on October 30
(PHOENIX BUSINESS JOURNAL, 7/15).
