UGLY NIGHT FOR BOXING IN NEW YORK CITY

The brawl that erupted after Riddick Bowe's victory over a
disqualified Andrew Golota was "a sad night for boxing here in
New York City," according to ESPN's Jimmy Roberts. New York City
Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and MSG President Dave Checketts held a
press conference shortly after the ugly incident and Giuliani
said that he "talked to members of the New York State Boxing
Commission and has asked them to suspend the licenses of anyone
who does not cooperate in the investigation" of the altercations
("SportsCenter,"ESPN, 7/12). ESPN's Al Bernstein said the brawl
will "significantly impact" on future boxing events at the MSG.
Bernstein: "The irony and the sad thing here is there had been
several terrific matches at the Garden -- boxing was coming back
at Madison Square Garden and we would hope that this situation
doesn't delay that or make it impossible for boxing to return
there (ESPN, 7/12).
