ERICSSON BUYS NAMING RIGHTS TO CAROLINAS STADIUM

Swedish telecommunications firm LM Ericsson Inc. has
purchased naming rights to Carolinas Stadium for $20M over a 10-
year period, according to the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. The
announcement is somewhat of a "surprise," since the team has said
it was looking for a company with "strong name recognition and
ties to the region." Joe Epley, Chair of Charlotte PR firm Epley
Associates, says the selection of Ericsson sends a "strong
message" that Charlotte is a "world city": "In one way you say,
why didn't [the name] have NationsBank or First Union or
something associated with Charlotte or the Carolinas. ... But if
we stay myopic, and don't look out, then you don't grow and
progress as an area." Ericsson, whose U.S. HQs is in TX, deals
extensively with MCI and BellSouth in the Southeast. Ericsson
reported $14.8B in '95 net sales and maintains operations near
Raleigh, NC and Lynchburg, VA (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 6/26).
