JACKSON STAYS IN CHICAGO RATHER THAN GO TO TERRAPIN STATION

The Bulls reached agreement with coach Phil Jackson on a
one-year deal worth $2.5M, according to Terry Armour of the
CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Jackson is now the third highest-paid coach in
the league, behind the Heat's Pat Riley and the Nets' John
Calipari, both of whom make $3M a year (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/21).
In Chicago, Sam Smith notes the "ugly tenor" of negotiations
between the team and Jackson, whose relationship with GM Jerry
Krause has deteriorated. Smith: "Whether the wounds opened over
the last few days can heal remain problematic" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
6/21). CHICAGO SUN-TIMES columnist Jay Mariotti called the deal
a "tense compromise, forced more by public pressure than anything
Jerrys Reinsdorf and Krause wanted to do" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES,
6/21). The team also met to divide the $2,045,750 they received
for winning the NBA Championship. They voted not to give Jack
Haley a share (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/21).
