ABC News announced yesterday that gold medal diver Greg
Louganis will serve as a special correspondent covering the
Atlanta Games for "Good Morning America." Louganis will be
teamed with ABC's Donna DeVarona for "GMA's" daily coverage.
Louganis recently was critical of NBC for not hiring him as a
diving analyst, but "GMA" Exec Producer Marc Burstein told the
N.Y. POST that the NBC flap "had absolutely nothing to do with"
signing Louganis. Burstein: "I made calls [to Louganis'
representatives] before any of that was reported" (Josef Adalian,
N.Y. POST, 6/20).
READ ALL ABOUT IT: NBC's Olympic Web Site will provide
reports and analysis of events in Atlanta from a variety of
Olympic-related publications: Track & Field News, VeloNews,
International Gymnast, Volleyball and Swimming World. Feature
stories, editorials, U.S. and international prospects, rule
overviews and historical perspectives will also be available.
The site, located at http:Olympic. nbc.com, will offer "hour-
to-hour" reporting of events, as well as chats, polls and
interviews (NBC).
IF YOU CAN'T BEAT 'EM, RERUN 'EM: MEDIAWEEK examines CBS
and ABC's strategies for counter-programming NBC's Olympics
coverage, with reruns of major events and movies from the past
year being the plan (MEDIAWEEK, 6/17 issue).
CANADIAN TAPE EMBARGO LIFTED: The CBC has decided to reduce
its original 18-hour embargo on Atlanta Olympic highlights. In
its deal with the IOC, the CBC had the right to block use of
footage for 18 hours after the completion of competition. But
after "strong objections" from TSN and CTV, the CBC eased the
delay until 11pm the same night. NBC is also using an 11pm
embargo (GLOBE & MAIL, 6/20).
