TAMPA COUNCIL NEWEST BARRIER FOR BUCS STADIUM

Tampa Mayor Dick Greco said "it would not surprise" him if
the City Council votes against a 15-year, half-cent sales tax to
help fund a new stadium for the Bucs, according to the TAMPA
TRIBUNE. The Council votes Thursday on whether to hold a public
hearing on the issue, but the "only unqualified support" thus far
for the tax has come from Councilmen Ronnie Mason and Joe Greco.
In fact, Councilman Charlie Miranda plans to donate his net
salary from the city for the next two months -- about $2,600
total -- to start an anti-stadium drive. Miranda: "I feel that
strongly about it. Government should not be in the stadium-
building business." If the Council rejects the offer,
Hillsborough County could still "put the issue to the voters,"
but the county would be forced to take on a larger portion of the
financing needed (Joe Henderson, TAMPA TRIBUNE, 6/18).
