NAMES IN THE NEWS

     Cowboys WR MICHAEL IRVIN was indicted for a second time on
charges of cocaine and marijuana possession in Dallas.  The
original case against Irvin was thrown out on a technicality
("SportsCenter," ESPN, 6/14)....On Saturday, ROY JONES, JR.
became the first person to ever play pro basketball and
participate in a pro boxing match on the same day.  He played
point guard for the USBL Jacksonville Barracudas in the
afternoon, then retained his IBF super middleweight title with a
TKO of Eric Lucas that night (MIAMI HERALD, 9/16)....NHL referee
ANDY VAN HELLEMOND has retired after 25 years ("SportsCenter,"
ESPN, 6/14)....NBC analyst PETER VECSEY was charged by the
Lynnwood, WA, city attorney's office with fourth degree assault
stemming from an incident at a toy store near Seattle.  Vecsey
and a companion reportedly assaulted a man after Vecsey overheard
him call him an "idiot."  The man has also filed a civil suit
(USA TODAY, 6/17)....ANDRE AGASSI is on the cover of the July
issue of GQ ("ET," 6/14)....Hall of Fame announcer MEL ALLEN died
yesterday at the age of 83 (Mult., 6/17)....National political
writer Kevin Merida writes on professional athletes playing a
more visible role in political affairs.  DAVID FALK, agent for
MICHAEL JORDAN, said it is "unlikely" Jordan would take a public
position in the U.S. Senate race in North Carolina between Sen.
Jesse Helms and his black opponent, Harvey Gantt.  Falk:  "The
players are pretty apolitical.  He stays away from that"
(WASHINGTON POST, 6/16).
