DEAD-HEAD DESIGNER TAKES LITHUANIAN T-SHIRT MAKER TO COURT

Greg Speirs, designer of the Grateful Dead-themed Lithuanian
Olympic basketball t-shirts, is suing manufacturer "Not Fade
Away" for $12M, according to the N.Y. POST. Speirs says Not Fade
Away, his one-time employer, paid him $17,000 for the design, but
since says millions of the shirts have been sold and that he
deserves more. Not Fade Away was denied a motion for summary
dismissal of the complaint last week, but spokesperson Martin
Leffer said, "In all, we produced less than 90,000 shirts. My
company only employed 25 people at the time and it would have
been physically impossible to make the number of shirts he claims
we made." Now as Atlanta approaches, Leffer, in partnership with
the remaining members of the Dead and the Lithuanian team, have
unveiled new shirts. Speirs seeks a "cease and desist" order
against Leffer and the Dead claiming copyright infringement (John
O'Mahony, N.Y. POST, 6/13).
