LEAGUE NOTES

The Nuveen Champions Tour is profiled in the current
BUSINESS WEEK. Co-Founder Ray Benton: "Sometimes we gross
$650,000 (per event) and sometimes $850,000." Michael Goldstein
writes that "more than half the revenue is from corporate
sponsors" with the balance from box seats, ticket sales, and
concessions. Expenses usually run about $750,000, with most
toward player compensation (BUSINESS WEEK, 6/17 issue)....USGA
President Judy Bell is profiled in NEWSDAY. Bell: "I believe
women should have equal access to the game and, to the extent
that I can influence that, I will" (NEWSDAY, 6/11)....The early
success of MLS is examined in Boston by Frank Dell'Apa, who
writes "organizers appear to have done enough things correctly to
ensure some success, though there are serious questions about the
quality of play and refereeing" (BOSTON GLOBE, 6/11)....
Officials of the Breeders' Cup said the event has been reinstated
at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack on October 29. Last week,
organizers announced they were withdrawing the event due to an
ongoing labor dispute, but have since "been assured" the problems
will be settled (Breeders Cup)....NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman
said the odds are slim of relocation or expansion to The Palace
of Auburn Hills outside Detroit. Bettman: "If a club has to
move, there are plenty of markets where we haven't been."
Although he didn't give a timetable on expansion, writer Cynthia
Lambert calls two years "a good bet" (DETROIT NEWS, 6/11).
