GOVERNOR RESISTS LATEST MILWAUKEE FUNDING SCHEME

A plan that would have the stadium board, and not the
Brewers, borrow an additional $50M to fund a new stadium was
supported by the team but not by WI Gov. Tommy Thompson,
according to the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. The plan, proposed
by community and business leaders, would shift $50M in borrowing
from the Brewers to the board and would save $2M a year in
interest cost since borrowing by the stadium board is tax-exempt.
Robert O'Toole, Chair of the Metro Milwaukee Association of
Commerce, said under the proposed terms, the Brewers would no
longer get $3.85M from the board for maintenance costs and would
have to pay an additional $15.2M in rent over their 30-year
lease. But Thompson said he "could not support" the plan,
calling the original $160M in bonding by the district "as far as
I can go because I promised the Legislature this is what it would
be." Eight votes from the 13-member board would be needed to
pass the plan (Lamke & Rinard, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 6/11).
