BREWERS STADIUM GETS PRUNED, ELECTION COULD SEE IT DOOMED

In an effort to keep the Brewers new $250M stadium within
budget, designers trimmed about 200,000 square feet, from the
facility, reducing it from 1.4 million square feet to 1.2
million. Kenneth Lamke of the Milwaukee JOURNAL SENTINEL reports
there were no major changes to the design, but concourses in some
areas were reduced by five feet and concession stands were re-
oriented. Meanwhile, Stadium Board Chair Robert Trunzo will meet
with other board members today to discuss a stadium lease with
the team and a schedule for when the board and the Brewers must
pay their share of stadium costs (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL,
5/30).
SWING VOTE: A recall vote involving state Sen. George
Petak, who provided the go-ahead vote for the Brewer stadium
bill, takes place Tuesday and could decide the future of the
stadium, according to Patrick Reusse of the Minneapolis STAR-
TRIBUNE. Reusse writes, if Petak wins, the stadium goes forward.
But if Planche wins and the Republicans lose the WI Senate, "the
Brewers could play the 1997 season in Charlotte, NC" (Minneapolis
STAR-TRIBUNE, 5/30).
