RIVAL RADIO STATIONS VIE FOR RIGHTS TO HUIZENGA'S TEAMS

There should be an "intense battle" between Miami radio
stations WIOD and WQAM for broadcast rights to the Dolphins,
Marlins and Panthers, according to Barry Jackson of the MIAMI
HERALD. Lowell "Bud" Paxson, the new owner of WIOD, said his
station will "aggressively pursue" rights to all three of Wayne
Huizenga's teams. The Dolphins currently have one season
remaining on their WIOD deal, while both the Marlins' and
Panthers' WQAM contracts expire this year. WQAM, meanwhile, has
expressed an interest in pursuing the Dolphins and wants to
continue its association with the Panthers and Marlins. Paxson,
whose Paxson Communications Corp. acquired WIOD Wednesday from
Cox Broadcasting for $13M, is the founder of the Home Shopping
Network. He said Heat and Univ. of Miami coverage -- both heard
on Paxson-owned WINZ -- will remain on WINZ even though WIOD has
a stronger signal (MIAMI HERALD, 5/23).
