THEY'RE NO ANGELS? DISNEY CLEANS HOUSE IN ANAHEIM

Less than 24 hours after the Anaheim City Council approved a
stadium renovation plan for the Angels, the team's new ownership
group, Walt Disney Co., "revamped" the Angels front office and
said they would consider altering the team's colors, logo and
name, according to Teaford and Foster of the L.A. TIMES. As
expected, Tony Tavares, President of Disney Sports Enterprises,
replaced Richard Brown as team President. Brown and about 20
Angels front-office workers will not be retained -- replaced
instead with Mighty Duck employees in similar positions. Most of
the layoffs came in marketing, sales, finance, accounting, media
relations and ticketing and included VP/CFO Ronald Shirley and
VP/Marketing Joe Schrier. Also: VP/Media Relations Josh Sevano,
VP-Civic Affairs Tom Seeberg. Management must now persuade MLB
to extend a May 31 deadline to change the logo, colors and name
to Anaheim Angels. Tavares said changing the logo, colors and
name are open to debate, but the team's mascots, currently two
bears, "definitely are not." Tavares wants a more marketable
mascot like the Ducks' Wild Wing: "With the Ducks, I threw up 17
times before I saw something I liked. Remember, I thought the
name Mighty Ducks was stupid" (L.A. TIMES, 5/16).
