SARA LEE EYES POST-OLYMPIC OPPORTUNITIES

Despite the fact that Sara Lee expects to sell $400M worth
of licensed items through its Champion division, the company's
biggest benefit may be making non-Olympic versions of these items
based on its Olympic experience. Stella Hopkins of the CHARLOTTE
OBSERVER reports Sara Lee anted up $20M for the license to sell
Olympic t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks and other knit products.
The biggest perk, however, may not be the prestige and
advertising opportunities, but the gain in experience and
contacts. Sara Lee itself is only making the socks and the
pantyhose -- other products like blazers, skirts, slacks and
"skorts" are coming from contractors. Polly Allen, designer for
the Olympic volunteer items: "This has really allowed (Sara Lee)
to develop a huge network of new suppliers and help them
transition into new things" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 4/28).
