HERMAN'S SPORTING GOODS FILES FOR BANKRUPTCY, AGAIN

Herman's Sporting Goods has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
for the second time in three years. All 117 Herman's stores will
remain open while the company reorganizes its finances
("Moneyline," CNN, 4/26). As of March 30, Herman's had $127.8M
in assets and $160.5M in liabilities, according to the filing.
Among the top unsecured creditors the company listed were Reebok,
Rollerblade, Authentic Fitness, Russell, Nike and Prince Sports
Group (N.Y. TIMES, 4/27). The N.Y. POST's Paul Tharp reports
that this time around in bankruptcy court, Herman's is "certain
to liquidate." In a statement issued from its HQs in NJ,
Herman's said its "plans to operate its stores so as to yield the
greatest possible return to its creditors, including aggressive
merchandise promotions and 'going out of business' sales."
Sources say Herman's tried unsuccessfully to arrange a bailout
through financing from some key suppliers that own 20% of the
company's stock as part of the '94 restructuring (N.Y. POST,
4/27).
