NIKE GIVES $500,000 CONDITIONAL GRANT TO PORTLAND SCHOOLS

Nike, Inc. gave a $500,000 grant to the Portland Public
Schools Foundation on two conditions: It wants the money used
exclusively to support athletic programs, and Nike will make the
donation only if it is matched by other parties, according to the
Portland OREGONIAN. The Foundation needs to raise $15M to avert
teacher layoffs and academic and athletic cuts. Nike CEO Phil
Knight will donate $100,000 and at Nike's request, Michael Jordan
will give $100,000. The Participate in the Lives of America's
Youth Foundation (P.L.A.Y.) will give $100,000 and the balance of
the $500,000 will come through athletic equipment and apparel.
Three other Nike athletes, all Portland natives, have given
$10,000: Damon Stoudamire, Terrell Brandon, and Peter Jacobsen
(Manning & Hernandez, Portland OREGONIAN, 4/25).
