THE NIGHT THAT THE KNIGHTS WENT OUT OF GEORGIA

IHL Knights President Richard Adler said that unless
progress is made in the team's arena situation by May 1, he will
move the team from Atlanta to Quebec City next season. Denise
Maloof reports in the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION that Adler fears the
Knights will become "a lame duck franchise" if the Omni is torn
down next season for a new arena. Adler and Knights CEO David
Berkman are already majority owners of an IHL franchise approved
for Quebec and have league approval to move the Knights there
instead. Meanwhile, Adler says if the Knights do in fact leave,
he will try to attract on NHL franchise -- Edmonton, Hartford or
Florida -- to Atlanta for '98-99, thereby pitting himself against
Braves and Hawks Owner Ted Turner, who also wants to obtain an
NHL team. Atlanta lost the Flames in '80 (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
4/24).
