MLS ATTENDANCE REMAINS STRONG OVER SECOND WEEKEND

     Attendance for the MLS' second full weekend:  On Saturday --
 Giants Stadium  46,826; RFK Stadium  35,032; Ohio Stadium
24,324.  Sunday -- Mile High Stadium  21,711; SJU's Spartan
Stadium  17,580 (Mult, 4/21-22).  Thursday's game at the Cotton
Bowl drew 8,541 (USA TODAY, 4/22).
     REACTION: In Washington, the DC United reported over 10,000
walk-up sales (WASHINGTON TIMES, 4/21).  DC fans turned out
despite the absence of the team's major Latin American stars who
went home to play for their national team.  Fans began gathering
outside RFK three hours before game time (WASHINGTON POST, 4/21).
In New York, columnist George Vecsey calls it "a rather stunning
first month" (N.Y. TIMES, 4/21).  The TAMPA TRIBUNE notes most
MLS officials "seem confident" the early crowds "are an
indication the market for soccer is here to stay" (TAMPA TRIBUNE,
4/21).
