LEAGUE NOTES

     The Wimbledon Men's Champion will earn $593,000 in '96, an
increase of $41,000 from '95.  The Women's winner will receive
$533,000, an increase of $38,000 ("Sports View," CNBC, 4/18). The
Lipton Championships won't offer equal pay for men's and women's
players, but it will be closer than '95.  Responding to
complaints from the WTA Tour, the women's purse will "be boosted
considerably" from the $1.55M of last year (MIAMI HERALD,
4/18)....One "incensed" NBA ref on the recent incidents with
players and the following penalties: "This is the NBA's fault,
pure and simple.  What are they waiting for?  For one of these
guys to haul off and belt me in the face?" (SI, 4/22
issue)....MLS goalkeeper Tony Meola on MLS: "If you put the right
people in the right markets, soccer has a chance to succeed in
this country. ... I've been a part of two World Cup's and there
was nothing different in the Rose Bowl last week" (NewSport,
4/18).
