PAPERWORK CLUTTERS MAVS' SALE

Citing "mounds of paperwork," outgoing Mavs Owner Donald
Carter and the incoming group led by Ross Perot Jr. agreed to
delay the announcement of the team's sale until Monday rather
than last night. The FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM's Richie Witt
reports "no serious snag," but just details yet to be ironed out
and the desire Carter has to tell "his players and employees
face-to-face before going public with the news he has sold the
franchise." GM Norm Sonju: "We're just trying to do in one week
what usually takes six to seven weeks" (FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM,
4/19).
DROP OF A HAT: A new logo may be necessary when the team
changes hand, according to Frank Luska of the DALLAS MORNING
NEWS. The current logo has a blue "M" superimposed on a green
basketball resting atop a white Stetson -- a hat associated with
Carter. Luska suggests a new emblem for Perot -- a shovel --
because it depicts Perot's real estate operation, "the ground-up
task he has undertaken," a new arena and the fact that "the
franchise will be turned upside down" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS,
4/19).
