Though details of the sale of the Mavericks to Ross Perot
Jr. have yet to be completed, sources indicate that the breakdown
of new ownership will see former owner Donald Carter retaining
"about 21%," while auto dealer David McDavid and former Cowboys
QB Roger Staubach are each expected to buy 5-10%. In addition,
sources anticipate Perot will sell 20-30% of the Mavs to Stars
Owner Tom Hicks, while Hicks is expected to allow Perot "an
unspecified percentage" of his NHL team. Because Perot is mainly
interested in the new arena aspect of the deal, it is likely he
will ultimately own "well under 40%," and sources would not be
surprised if he "wound up with a smaller percentage than Hicks
and or Carter" -- while retaining "managing control" (DALLAS
MORNING NEWS, 4/18). Meanwhile, new ownership is breathing new
hope among officials in Arlington, Irving and Lewisville who
believe they have a fresh chance to build an arena for both
teams. Barbara Powell of the FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM reports
Carter included a $15M penalty if ownership moves the team out of
the DFW area in three years, but that area is not restricted to
the city of Dallas (FORT WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 4/18).
