QUESTIONS REMAIN ON VALIDITY OF WEST SIDE STADIUM PLAN

Charles Millard, head of the Economic Development Corp.,
which co-sponsored a study recommending Manhattan's West Side as
the best site for a new Yankee Stadium, said paying for the
proposed $1.1B project is a "crucial issue to be resolved,"
according to Steve Zipay of NEWSDAY. But Millard does note that
attendance would increase at a West Side facility, citing that
after three years, median attendance at Camden Yards, SkyDome and
Comiskey Park was up 80%, translating to an average of 48,000 per
Yankee game (NEWSDAY, 4/18). In the current CRAIN'S NEW YORK
BUSINESS, Philip Lentz profiles the city's business community,
thus far reluctant to back a new stadium. Some business leaders
"might be willing to back the project if it would be home not
only for the Yankees but also for national sports and political
events" (CRAIN'S NEW YORK BUSINESS, 4/15 issue).
