SUNRISE ECLIPSES LAUDERDALE AS LOCATION FOR PANTHERS' LAIR

The Broward County Commission has voted to build the
Panthers' new $212M arena in Sunrise, FL, after Owner Wayne
Huizenga determined a Fort Lauderdale site would be too costly,
according to the MIAMI HERALD. The Lauderdale location had the
potential to cost Huizenga as much as $50M more than Sunrise if
the facility was not ready by '98. The Commission, whose focus
now turns to financing, will vote next Tuesday on a 2% bed tax
expected to provide more than half the money for the project.
Meanwhile, local hoteliers have "hinted" they will sue to block
the tax's inception if approved (MIAMI HERALD, 4/16). In Miami,
a HERALD editorial calls the process a "tour de force," citing
"the low risk to property taxpayers" (MIAMI HERALD, 4/16).
REVITALIZATION: While answering shareholder questions at
the annual Carnival Corp. meeting Monday, Heat Owner Micky Arison
said the planned construction of a $165M arena for his team
represents downtown Miami's "last shot at really developing"
(Reed & Finefrock, MIAMI HERALD, 4/16).
