DOES MAGIC PLAN TO MAKE KCAL-TV TARGET AFRICAN- AMERICANS?

Lakers star Magic Johnson is heading one of five groups
interested in buying KCAL-TV from Disney, and may be targeting
the station to create what would be the first "black-oriented
broadcast channel." Sallie Hofmeister reports in this morning's
L.A. TIMES that Johnson's group, and another led by BET Chair
Robert Johnson, are both interested in such a format. Other
interested groups are said to include Argyle Television.
Hofmeister reports that potential bidders "doubt" that Disney
will be able to get $300M for the station it purchased for $320M
in '88. Sources say Disney would prefer to sell to a "friendly
buyer to keep an outlet for its sports teams," and that "it's
unclear how a black-targeted station might use the sports
programming" (L.A. TIMES, 4/12).
