DAMAGE DEPOSIT DEMAND TO FURTHER DELAY RAPTORS START UP?

     The Raptors are being asked to pay a C$5M damage deposit
before they start building their new downtown arena, according to
the TORONTO STAR.  The city's Metro Transportation department
wants the money as "protection in case construction of the new
stadium damages" the nearby Gardiner Expressway.  The Raptors
call the demand "outrageous" and are refusing to pay, saying it
would place a "financial burden on their construction plans."
Lawyers from both sides will meet to work out a compromise.  In
addition to Metro's demand, David Israelson writes "rumors have
been whizzing through financial circles that the stadium plans
are facing serious delays."  Team President John Bitove promises
"everything will get done" with construction this spring (TORONTO
STAR, 3/29).
