BUCS DEAL SKEPTICALLY VIEWED BY SOME IN TAMPA

After hearing details of the "near-deal" negotiators have
worked out to build a new $168M stadium for the Bucs,
Hillsborough County Commission Chair Jim Norman replied, "Come
On! This is a terrible deal," according to the TAMPA TRIBUNE.
County Commissioner Joe Chillura: "I've been supportive, but I've
got serious reservations now whether I can support this." Some
questioned Bucs Owner Malcolm Glazer's business practices,
including lawsuits involving his Zapata Corp. Tampa City Council
Chair Ronnie Mason: "As I look into the Glazers and their
background, their track record, they have not been good business
partners with other people throughout the country." Another
issue is control of the Stadium Authority. City Councilman Rudy
Fernandez said he is "very reluctant" to turn over control of the
stadium, and also said he opposes giving up the right to sue the
team if it leaves (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 3/22).
