Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson has drawn criticism from the NCAA and school officials over an application he filed with the Nevada Gaming Commission to purchase a 10% share in the slot machine operation at Las Vegas' McCarran Airport. NCAA Exec Dir Cedric Dempsey: "It is ill-advised for anyone connected to college sports to be involved, even peripherally, with gambling interests." Georgetown Univ. President Rev. Leo O'Donovan: "I understand and respect John's interests in expanding business opportunities for African- Americans. ... [But] I think it's inappropriate for any active Georgetown coach to have investments in the gaming industry and John knows that." Asked about the issue, Thompson alluded to legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp, who owned racehorses. Thompson did say he would base his decision ultimately on Rev. O'Donovan's opinion (WASHINGTON POST, 3/19).
