NASHVILLE VOTERS WILL HAVE A SAY ON THE OILERS

Nashville officials have determined that a petition asking
for a referendum on the Oilers stadium financing and relocation
package is valid, and that a vote will be held in early May,
according to the HOUSTON CHRONICLE. John Williams reports the
date will be determined next Wednesday, but that May 7 is
probable. The referendum will ask voters whether the Metro
Council may issue up to $80M in bonds to help finance
construction of a new 65,000-seat stadium. While polls have
indicated a majority favoring the package, TN Gov. Don Sundquist
hopes the vote is not taken for granted. Sundquist: "Here we
have an NFL franchise being served up to Tennessee on a platter,
and we'd better make sure we take advantage of it" (HOUSTON
CHRONICLE, 3/15).
