CITY OF BROTHERLY LOVE MAY HAVE A STADIUM SPAT ON ITS HANDS

With no guarantee that public funding will be available for
even one new stadium in Philadelphia, the Phillies and Eagles are
concentrating their efforts on "separate tracks" with the "shared
understanding that their interests collide," according to the
PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. PA Gov. Tom Ridge has appointed a task
force to look at how to "satisfy" the state's four teams, the
Phillies, Eagles, Steelers and Pirates. The task force will make
its recommendations by July 1, but the critical decisions will be
left to Ridge and other officials, with the Phillies and Eagles
"gearing up" to persuade those decision makers. Michael Sokolove
writes the Phillies "appear to be in a stronger position," noting
the strong relationship Phillies General Partners Bill Giles and
David Montgomery have with state and local politicians. By
contrast, Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie is new to the area. The
Eagles will make their case by arguing Veterans' Stadium is a
baseball, not football, facility (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 3/10).
