MARYLAND STADIUM UPDATE: WILL BALTIMORE BE DOME-READY?

Officials from the Maryland Stadium Authority are
considering incorporating the requirements for a roof into the
base of the football stadium planned for Baltimore's Camden Yards
area. According to the Baltimore SUN, Authority Chair John Moag
has asked architect HOK to provide an estimate for making the
stadium "dome-ready." Since there is no dome on the East Coast,
Moag noted the possible added events (Jon Morgan, Baltimore SUN,
2/23).
CLOSER IN LANDOVER: Prince George's County Exec Wayne Curry
signed a tentative agreement last night to have the county pay
some costs of a new Redskins stadium, moving the Landover, MD,
project "one step closer to final approval" (John Mercurio,
WASHINGTON TIMES, 2/23).
GOOD DEAL, BAD DEAL? Two area editorials take different
positions on Baltimore NFL Owner Art Modell's $24M contribution
to his team's stadium project. The SUN praises Modell's "good-
faith gesture" (Baltimore SUN, 2/23). But the WASHINGTON TIMES
notes Modell only agreed to the $24M in exchange for gaining the
revenue from naming rights. Comparing present values of the two
payments -- $24M over 10 years, and $1M a year for 30 years, the
TIMES calculates a net of only $1M for the state (WASHINGTON
TIMES, 2/23).
