Seahawks President David Behring issued a statement late
Monday "denying that meetings with a prospective buyer of the NFL
team were ever scheduled." Behring said his father, Owner Ken
Behring, does not plan on selling the team and remains committed
to relocating to Southern CA (ESPNET). It was earlier reported
that a meeting between Ken Behring and "a prospective buyer" was
called off Sunday due to "too much interest from the media,"
according to Rebecca Boren in the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER.
Boren reports that since Behring announced his move to L.A. two
weeks ago, King County officials have "scrambled" to find a buyer
should local officials succeed in convincing Behring he would
lose "the various lawsuits." Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen is
one known interested party, and King County Councilman Pete von
Reichbauer said he is also working with a second potential buyer.
Von Reichbauer: "Things are going to cool for a while" (SEATTLE
POST-INTELLIGENCER, 2/19).
SINS OF THE FATHER? David Behring gave his first interview
since the announcement. The P-I's Clare Farnsworth reports
Behring's sentiments "contrast with the outwardly cold-hearted
approach being taken by his father." David Behring indicated he
did not learn of his father's intentions until a week before the
announcement, and called officials' failure to keep the Kingdome
in top condition in the face of improvements for the Mariners and
Sonics "a slap to my father's face" (POST-INTELLIGENCER, 2/19).
