NFL CAN ONLY WARN COWBOYS PLAYERS AWAY FROM BERTOLINI SHOW

ESPN followed up on the story first reported during Super
Bowl week concerning the participation of several Cowboys players
at a NJ card show organized by convicted felon Michael Bertolini.
According to ESPN, the NFL sent a memo to Cowboys Owner Jerry
Jones and the players involved this week to brief them on
Bertolini's background. The letter stated the league could not
require the players to pull out of the show without evidence of
prior knowledge of Bertolini's involvement with illegal gambling
and tax evasion. NFL General Counsel Jay Moyer: "We've done
what we can usefully and constructively do, and I have great
confidence in the judgment and the wisdom players and their
representatives in terms of problems like this." Cowboys DL
Charles Haley, who will be at the show, was interviewed outside
the White House where the Cowboys had a Super Bowl ceremony with
President Clinton. Haley: "What happens if we break that
contract? [Will the league] take up the legal battle on that?"
("SportsCenter," 2/13).
