MAGIC MATES SQUARE OFF IN ADS: L'IL PENNY VS. BIG, BAD SHAQ

Shaquille O'Neal's new Reebok ad in which he mocks teammate
Anfernee Hardaway's "Little Penny" spots, premiered during
Monday's "American Music Awards" on ABC. George Diaz reports in
this morning's ORLANDO SENTINEL that the spot "obviously tweaks
Nike," when O'Neal "accidentally" knocks a "Little Penny" look-
alike off of a chair after the doll asks, "You got room for a
brother on your planet?" The two players are taking the
competition between their shoe companies lightly. O'Neal: "I'm
sure they're going to come back with something, probably have
Penny saying, 'You know, I've been hanging around Shaq too long.
I've been missing too many free throws.'" Nike officials "did
not appear too agitated" at the spot, according to Diaz. Erin
Patton, Dir of PR for Nike Men's Basketball: "Obviously, it lets
us know that Little Penny is a success" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 1/31).
