POLL SHOWS STADIUM OPPOSITION GROWING IN MARYLAND

In a "double dose of bad news" for MD Gov. Parris
Glendening, state Senators introduced legislation Tuesday to kill
state financing for new Browns and Redskins stadiums, and a new
statewide poll found "overwhelming opposition to the stadiums in
every corner of the state." According to the WASHINGTON POST,
69% oppose plans for a Redskins stadium in Landover and 62% are
against the costlier proposal for the Browns in Baltimore. John
Frece, Glendening's Communications Dir: "It's obvious we need to
do a better job of getting the message out." The poll
"delighted" critics, who argue state money should be used to
attract "real jobs, not peanut vendors." Glendening said the
poll missed some facts: "They did not inform the respondents
that if the stadiums are built, there will be a net return of
revenue to the state over and above the annual cost to the state"
(Charles Babington, WASHINGTON POST, 1/31).
