JONES WORKING TO SCUTTLE LEAGUE TELECOM DEAL?

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones is working to "scuttle" a
corporate sponsorship deal for the NFL in the telecom category,
according to this week's BRANDWEEK. Terry Lefton reports Jones
sent a letter to other owners urging them to "reject a league-
wide telecom sponsor, asserting that clubs could profit more by
signing deals team-by-team." Lefton reports the league is
reportedly close to a $12.1M per year deal with Sprint. Vikings
President Roger Headrick reportedly has responded to Jones "with
his own missive" challenging Jones' figures. Following that, the
10-man ownership committee that oversees NFL Properties voted
unanimously to proceed with the deal. GTE's NFL sponsorship
expires after Sunday's Super Bowl. Lefton notes that AT&T and
GTE "are also in the running," and that the league "hopes a deal
is set by March" (BRANDWEEK, 1/22 issue).
