The NHL will use a new puck in the Devils-Sharks games
tonight at Continental Airlines Arena that will test new
technology for TV broadcasts of NHL games. League and Fox execs
will have official comment on the new puck at a January 18 news
briefing in Boston (NHL). A chip inside the puck reportedly
creates a "vapor trail" allowing the puck to be more visible to
the TV viewer (THE DAILY)....The TORONTO STAR reports that "World
Cup" as a hockey term is registered by the Canadian Adult
Recreational Hockey Association. Group president Larry Regan:
"I imagine the NHL and the NHLPA will have to deal with us before
they can call their show the World Cup. They seem to think I'll
give it to them. But I'm not in a giving mood" (TORONTO STAR,
1/12)....NASCAR officials, Dale Earnhardt and reps from other
Winston Cup teams are in Japan this weekend to promote the sport
(DETROIT NEWS, 1/12)....MLB is expected to formally announce
Arlan Kantarian soon as the sport's new marketing chief.
Kantarian is already said to have met with Fox and MLBP officials
(USA TODAY BASEBALL WEEKLY, 1/10-16).
