OILERS TO LEAVE ASTRODOME EARLIER THAN EXPECTED?

Houston Mayor Bob Lanier said Wednesday he is now
negotiating to let the Oilers leave the Astrodome earlier than
the expiration of the team's lease in '97. According to the
HOUSTON CHRONICLE, Lanier is softening his previous stance
because he believes Oilers Owner Bud Adams, as NFL Finance
Committee Chair, could be an ally in Houston's bid to regain an
NFL franchise. Attorney Wayne Fisher, who represents Astrodome
USA: "If they are really going to leave, then I am glad they are
out talking with the city and we can get in line to do what we
need to do." The Oilers have talked about playing in Memphis or
Knoxville while waiting for Nashville's stadium to be built in
time for the '98 season (Williams & Mason, HOUSTON CHRONICLE,
1/10).
