TALKS FOR HOME-GROWN NAGANO RIGHTS END IN FAILURE

The second round of talks between Japanese TV broadcasters
and the IOC ended in failure Thursday after the chief negotiator
of the Japanese consortium said the "gap between the two sides is
too big to bridge." The consortium is made up of Japan
Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) and major commercial Japanese TV firms.
The IOC "wants the Japanese to set" an $80M price on the rights
fees, according to KYODO NEWS, but that amount "is a far cry from
what the Japanese have in mind," sources say. NHK paid $10M to
broadcast the '94 Games in Lillehammer (KYODO NEWS SERVICE,
12/21).
