TOBACCO INTERESTS QUESTION SPECIFICS OF CANADIAN BAN

Canadian Health Minister Diane Marleau's proposed
legislation calling for a ban on tobacco advertising refers to
"brand name sponsorship activities" that "have an influence on
youth and use 'lifestyle' choices in their market research and
creative materials. According to this morning's GLOBE & MAIL,
this has Imperial Tobacco Chair & CEO Don Brown believing sports
sponsorships may not apply. Brown said he "cannot conceive that
a branded sports event is in any way able to override warnings
and programs against smoking which young people receive at an
early age." Imperial sponsors many tournaments through its du
Maurier brand, including an LPGA major (GLOBE & MAIL, 12/13)....
Insiders say next year's Grey Cup may be moved to an earlier
date, from December to November, to avoid a hotel crunch in
Hamilton and to "appease" U.S. owners who want to move the
schedule up in the summer (Hamilton SPECTATOR, 12/13).
