     Phil Mushnick writes some TV execs "are trying to influence
a major cable operator in New Jersey to share in the creation of
a real-deal New Jersey sports network" that would carry the Nets
and Devils before 2000.  Both are currently on SportsChannel.
The channel would also look to carry Rutgers, Seton Hall, and
Princeton athletics.  A large cable operator is "needed to ensure
clearance" (N.Y. POST, 11/22)....ESPN Enterprises and Starwave
Corp. are developing new broadband technologies to increase
multi-media and real-time viewing of ESPNet SportsZone on the
World Wide Web.  The technology uses a more powerful cable modem
enabling data transmission 1,000 times quicker than standard
phone modems (ESPN)...The FCC is expected to approve Westinghouse
Electric's $5.4B purchase of CBS (N.Y. TIMES, 11/22)....Doug
Flutie will appear as guest analyst during "The CBS Sports Show"
this Saturday.  He will discuss college football with host Pat
O'Brien (CBS)....Bob Raissman speculates, if Don Mattingly
retires from baseball, he could end up in the booth Yankee
flagship WPIX (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/22)....ESPN will televise the
Heisman Trophy presentation on December 9 (ESPN)....Izzy Asper,
who is "on the verge of becoming Canada's richest and most
powerful broadcasting tycoon," is profiled in the current
MACLEAN'S.  Asper recently offered $636M for WIC Western
International Communications LTD.  If the bid is successful,
Asper will have build his CanWest Global into a "third national
chain alongside the CBC and CTV Network" (MACLEAN'S, 11/27
issue)....The USGA has established its own site on the Web.
