SRI SURVEYS AMERICANS' BELIEFS ON SPONSORSHIP DEPENDANCE

     Sponsorship Research International's "Sponsorfest," a
national weekly telephone poll of interest in sport and
sponsorship awareness, asked 1,000 Americans in July how likely
some sports would be to survive without corporate sponsorship.
Percentages are based on the answers "certain not to" or "almost
certain not to" survive. The results:
INDY CAR RACING 53% OLYMPIC GAMES 40%
     NASCAR RACING 52% "60 MINUTES" 40%
     U.S. OPEN GOLF 46% COLLEGE BOWLS 39%
     U.S. OPEN TENNIS 45% SUPER BOWL 31%
WORLD CUP SOCCER 44% NCAA FINAL FOUR 31%
SRI notes that the fans' belief that motorsports are more
dependant on sponsorship "shows that auto racing fans are more
loyal to their sponsors' products." SRI Dir Mike Kelner: "The
more a fan sees his or her purchase as having a direct effect on
the continuation of his or her favorite sport, the more motivated
they become to vote with their wallet" (THE DAILY).
