NO PAYNE, NO GAIN: ACOG SAYS IT PASSES EVENT TESTS

ACOG claims success in its five-month series of test events,
but admitted work remains to resolve some minor problems,
according to the N.Y. TIMES. The series of 19 test events,
dubbed "Atlanta Sports '95," ended over the weekend with a
gymnastics meet at the Georgia Dome. Jerry Schwartz writes the
most ambitious of the events, the IBM Atlanta Gymnastics
Invitational, drew 14,982, the largest crowd ever for an Olympic
test event. Organizers say their aim was to test themselves by
having both gymnastics and basketball competitions back-to-back
at the Dome. A few minor "glitches" led to some overlap, but
organizers say turnaround time will be tighter next summer.
According to ACOG's Managing Dir of Sports Dave Maggard: "I
think we gave a lot of people a lot of confidence going into the
Games" (N.Y. TIMES, 11/22).
