LEAGUE NOTES

     FORBES magazine examines the dispute between CART's IndyCar
circuit ("the Twisty People") and Tony George's new Indy Racing
League ("the Oval People") (FORBES, 12/4 issue). ....The boards
of the American Bowling Congress, Women's International Bowling
Congress and Bowling Proprietors of America met in Milwaukee last
month and approved resolutions to combine the groups under one
umbrella -- Bowling Inc., which will unify rules, awards and
marketing of the sport.  The PBA has already "bought into" the
marketing division of Bowling Inc. (Dick Evans, MIAMI HERALD,
11/19)....In the current NEW YORKER, Roger Angell reviews the MLB
playoffs.  On the new system, with 31 postseason games this year,
he writes, "[It] made for plenty of baseball entertainment, just
as the owners and planners had hoped, but, inevitably, less that
can be remembered.  Baseball feels like the rest of America now:
it feels like television" (NEW YORKER, 11/27 issue)....The USGA
has become one of the first supporters of the EPA's "Pesticide
Stewardship Program," which seeks to reduce pesticide use in both
agricultural and non-agricultural settings (USGA)....The TAMPA
TRIBUNE profiles the Women's Professional baseball League, of
which the St. Petersburg Pepsi XL's are the only franchise with a
major sponsor (TAMPA TRIBUNE, 11/22)....On PBS' "Nightly Business
Report," Jeff Yastine examined the current state of business in
the NFL noting the need for increased stadium revenue as the
reason for the recent franchise relocations.  Sports Marketing
Group's Nye Lavelle: "Like in any business, you want to get new
customers, but you don't want to throw away the existing
customers you have" (PBS, 11/21).
