MEDIA NOTES

In Toronto, William Houston writes "it has struck many as
strange that in the year" the NBA expands to Canada, TSN has
dropped its NBA game-of-the-week. Since losing out on NBA
rights, TSN "has been accused of indifference to the NBA, of
playing down league scores and stressing the NHL." (Toronto
GLOBE & MAIL, 11/20).....Noting the shrinking of AFC markets
after franchise relocation, Milton Kent writes NBC (Olympics,
MLB, NBA) "probably wouldn't feel pressured to bid high for a
weakened AFC" when the deal expires after '97. That could lead
to a CBS return to the NFL, but Kent asks, "How willing would
Westinghouse ... be to grab a decidedly inferior product?" Kent
writes one solution would be realignment (Baltimore SUN,
11/20)....UCLA Coach Terry Donahue has talked to CBS Sports about
possibly becoming a color commentator, but "no firm commitment
has been made" (L.A. TIMES, 11/19)....CBS Sports will extend
rights to golf's Presidents Cup through '98 (CBS
Sports)....Recent editorial moves at Time-Warner publishing by
Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstine, are featured in today's N.Y.
TIMES. Carmody & Landler write many in the company feel the SI
"bake off" ended in an "unnecessary public humiliation" for
Life's Daniel Okrent, a widely respected editor. Bill Colson is
SI's new Managing Editor (N.Y. TIMES, 11/20).... AT&T is
reportedly discussing a multi-billion investment in Time Warner's
cable business (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 11/20).
