The Lightning plan to apply to host either the '98 or '99
NHL All-Star Game in their new arena, the Ice Palace, (TAMPA
TRIBUNE, 11/10)....In New York, Robin Finn notes the about
problems the WTA Tour is having with injuries. This week's Tour
Championships in New York lost Monica Seles to injury and the
Tour is worried about Steffi Graf's "iffy backache." Finn: "You
panic in private, but in public you assure your new sponsor,
Corel ...there is nothing to worry about" (N.Y. TIMES,
11/12)....Starting in '96, Reading, PA, will host the new Betsy
King LPGA Classic (LPGA)....The USGA has established an
environmental program, "Wildlife Links," that represents golf's
first comprehensive investigation of the game's relationship with
wildlife habitats (USGA).... In Indianapolis, Bill Koeing reports
a vast network of car owners, corporate sponsors, local and
national media, and Indiana businesses are watching the dispute
between the IRL and CART asking "what if big-name drivers and
fans boycott the '96 '500'" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR-NEWS,
11/11).....Greg Norman said he has seen two new proposals for a
World Tour. While he reports "quite a few players" have signed
on, he is not one of them -- yet. PGA Tour Commissioner Tim
Finchem: "If something happens, I feel comfortable that it will
be done with the five governing bodies around the world"
(GOLFWEEK, 11/11 issue)....Rick Piet, who is suing the CFL
claiming the league prevented him from buying the Argonauts, said
he has been approached by an unnamed group to be a silent partner
in a bid for the team (TORONTO SUN, 11/14).
