MEDIA NOTES

CBC Grey Cup Host Brian Williams on the future of the CFL:
"For Larry Smith to say expansion in the U.S. hasn't been a
failure is insulting" (TORONTO SUN, 11/13)....The Brewers have
inked a deal with WTMJ-AM to broadcast the team's games for five-
years. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. WTMJ has been the
Brewers' flagship station in 23 of the team's 26 seasons in
Milwaukee (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 11/11)....The IHL Houston
Aeros have created a home page on the internet. Address:
www.aeros.com (Aeros). ....ESPN's Bill Conlin, on MLB's new TV
deal: "The candy man is back" ("Sports Reporters," 11/12)....Fox
is working with a surround sound process for NFL telecasts.
According to Sony VP Vic Pacor, all four broadcast networks are
using surround-sound, but only Fox and ABC's "Monday Night
Football" with sports. A "drawback" is cost, as an upgrade to
get the full effect is about $500 (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION,
11/12).... Reviewing TNT's "Six Days to Sunday," Leonard Shapiro
notes NFL Films "omitted the best story of the week" -- a Troy
Aikman "fit" over mismanagement of the game clock. TNT, an NFL
cable partner, "was foisting a public relations job on the
American public" (WASHINGTON POST, 11/12)....In Boston, Jack
Craig writes, "Lack of time and energy is at the heart of the
problem of sports journalism on the networks." Craig points out
that SI's Peter King was given 39 seconds on ABC Monday to
explain the Browns situation. Craig: "Networks much prefer to
rent print reporters, such as King, who are already covering
stories, but then they put them in a vise with a quick clock"
(BOSTON GLOBE, 11/12).
