MICHAEL'S ARMY? GOLF CENTERS COULD HELP SELL GAME

In the aftermath of the opening of the first of four planned
Michael Jordan Golf Centers, some are suggesting that the game's
future may lie with a basketball player. In his column in
GOLFWEEK, Adam Barr writes "the only golfer to have anything like
Jordan's appeal is Arnold Palmer." Barr notes that "golf will
never produce another Palmer," and that "a faceless Tour" causes
"a twinge for golf's marketers." Barr: "The real question is,
has it gotten to the point where a basketball player can sell
golf better than a golfer? While you're thinking about your
answer, remember there are Golden Bear Golf Centers out there,
all fine facilities -- but when's the last time you heard about
one?" (GOLFWEEK, 10/21 issue). Jordan's first golf center cost
about $3M (GOLFWEEK, 10/28 issue).
